Quality of our weaves
In order to determine quality in products, one needs to look at the construction, the size of the reeds, color, material. Many cheap variations are made with stripped rattan, half reeds where it looks ok from the outside but are broken and stripped inside. These pictures gives you a closeup look at our product quality

Our crafsmanship at work
These craftsmen can produce tens to hundreds of units per day depending on the detail required. They often work with different size reeds (strands) of material. For many of the, this is their sole source of income and they live in remote villages. They are independant contractors. We support a fair trade policy so they can earn a living wage for their craftsmanship.

This year, our suppliers and manufacturers have switched to water based stains and colors. We are very excited about this change as it further enables us to be green in a very real sense. We know that this process is continuous and it is not going to happen over night but we are very pleased with the progress so far. These water based items will be phased into our product line over the rest of this year. Any product that has a dark stain or color will water based.
We are also looking at using recyclable, re-usable, returnable corrugated plastic shipping boxes rather than 1 time use cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes can be made with recycled content but it is still 1 time use and causes significant more energy use and much of that still ends up in the landfill. This is significantly more challenging. One of the biggest challenges is to ensure getting the boxes back to us from various customer locations in a cost effective and environmentally way. There is shipping cost involved so we have to find a way to collect sufficient quantities before it can be returned back from our customer locations. This is one reason that we will probably want to work with our largest accounts in a closed loop environment to test this first. This will be a long process and we are still in the early stages of checking the viability of making this work. It is definitely or goal to make this happen as long as it is cost effective AND environmentally friendly. Both objectives need to be met. However, in the long run this is another way to move towards being genuinely green.
Similarly, we encourage our customers, many of whom are green retailers, to not only increase their green and eco-friendly products but also merchandise using eco-friendly products.

To further expand on our efforts to be green and eco-friendly, we are offering an incentive to customers that are currently faxing orders to us. We are offering a 1% discount on the next order if the order is emailed to us. This only applies to customers that were previously faxing orders or calling us on the phone. Not only is email more efficient, it can also be tracked to ensure that your order gets to us.
In the near future, we will be requesting that all orders be placed online through our web site. This is not yet available since we are wholesale, there is more work to do. A retail site is simpler.

This most recent report shows year over year costs up 2.4%. Including energy, the prices are even higher. There are two key factors that influence our pricing. Lower dollar relative to foreign currencies (US dollar is weaker) and Energy costs. We import our products from overseas. In addition to those two key factors, our suppliers face increasing cost of commodities. Our pricing will reflect these costs for 2010. We change our pricing twice a year (Jan and July). During the difficult period of 2009, we have maintained our prices for the entire year. Our Jan 2010 price changes are expected to be minor and only for some products.

Wouldn’t it be green ($) if retailers can not only sell eco-friendly products but also make their whole store eco-friendly. Everything from eco-lighting, eco-merchandising, and eco-packaging.
